Tula The Revolt is a breath-taking and true story about repression, desperation and betrayal. An account of the unequal fight for justice, but most of all about inspiration, love and freedom.
Tula The Revolt is an international production about the leader of the Slave Revolt of 1795 on the island of Curacao, which at the time, fell under the rule of the Republic of the United Netherlands. It tells the true story of a man who had the courage to stand up against his oppressors and who tried to give his people back their freedom in a non- violent way.
Tula (Obi Abilli), a slave on the island of Curacao, is becoming increasingly aware of the inequality between his people and its white oppressors. When his girlfriend, Speranza (Natalie Simpson), tells him that slavery has been abolished on Haiti he pleads for freedom and equality between black and white. Tula’s ideas fall on deaf ears with his master, plantation owner Van Uytrecht (Jeroen Willems). He does find a willing ear among his own people, though, and inspired by his willpower people go on strike and join him. When the news about the strike reaches governor De Veer (Jeroen Krabbé), he sends Dutch troops under the command of captain Van Westerholt (Derek de Lint) to the plantation. Tula, who has reluctantly become the leader of the uprising, wants to reach an agreement peacefully. He soon finds out, though, that he has no option but to abandon this idealistic idea and instead fight with the other slaves for freedom, equality and brotherhood.
On Curacao the 17th of August is commemorated every year as the start of the struggle for independence and emancipation.
